Now I remember why I always go through the park; your horn made me jump, but I know your bite is worse than your bark. You don’t seem to see me as I’m riding next to you; if you can’t go around me, you seem to want to drive right through, saying to yourself: Get there, even though I’m late … Get there, it’s a crucial date … Get there, I can’t afford to wait … Get there. Cars all around me, as we crawl along the street; I keep looking about me, but our eyes so rarely meet. It’s like this lane is a tunnel, headlong into the dark; but all you seem to be thinking is you wanna make your mark. I’ll get there, I’m gonna have my say … Get there, need to be there yesterday … Get there, just get out of my way! Get there. Pedal power pushing versus horse power rushing; is it any wonder crushing’s a daily occurrence? Do I really have to jump the lights? Does this journey have to be a fight? If we tried to see it, we might find a W/way To get there, open up your eyes and see … Get there, it could be you as well as me … Get there, let’s turn it into we will get there

Here she comes, head held low, a picture of concentration. Taking the shortest route from A to B, in her sonic isolation. She walks by you every day, but does she ever see your face? Rushing down the street, pounding her feet, in her blind determination. She’s a girl in a hurry, ain’t got no time In such a hurry, walkin’ that line She’s a girl in a hurry, ain’t got no time for you There she goes, on her way, oblivious to your attention with her bag on her back, her training shoes and her mp3 collection. You could try to walk her way, but you’d have to pick up the pace: livin’ in haste, no time to waste, making virtual connections. She’s a girl in a hurry, ain’t got no time In such a hurry, walkin’ that line She’s a girl in a hurry, ain’t got no time for you You wanna slow her down, lighten her frown, set her free, help her to see. You wanna turn her round, from lost to found, draw her into community. She’s a girl in a hurry, ain’t got no time In such a hurry, walkin’ that line She’s a girl in a hurry, ain’t got no time for you

Two wheels good, four wheels bad so they say, but it’s not the whole truth. To see the big picture, you’ve got to be on your feet - there lies the burden of proof. ‘Cause the ones on wheels only seem to have eyes for those who travel as they do. ‘Look out for the little guy’ doesn’t seem to apply to me, according to you. Am I invisible? Nothing at all? You just seem to see through me - am I meaningless in your world? Am I invisible? War on the streets as things fall apart: keep your eyes cast down, or looking straight through as you forge ahead; every face wears a frown. Beware of the wheels that fly alongside taking no notice of you. Your tender frame is no match for their steel; slow down, you’ll get through. We’re all invisible, nothing at all. You just seem to see through me - am I meaningless in your world? Am I invisible? Am I? Am I invisible? Can you even see me? Look out!

Sitting shellshocked north of the river, bike in pieces on the road; Fear and pity in the eyes of strangers, as my life slowly ebbs away. Why do they stand and stare, why can I get no air? Hard sunset, as the darkness closes in. Colours are fading now, like the heartbeat beneath my skin. Things don’t look too good for me and there’s still so much to do and see. Hard sunset, hard sunset. Sunset (What’s that voice I hear?) Sunset (Something’s drawing near) Sunset The swan. The curlew’s cry. Out of the mist into the sun. Dappled shades in a silver sky. Traffic’s building up, I’m going down. Strange sunset, these voices in my head. So sorry baby, for all those things I said. Time slipped by like sand, things got out of hand. Strange sunset, strange sunset. Sunset Seagulls shrieking rise from the river. Heron fishing in the shallows. A warm embrace as I start to shiver. The scent of garlic fills the air. The bushes in bloom. The painting in our room. This long sunset, giving me time to see all those precious moments, just for you and me. Simple as bread and wine, precious as the gift of time. Long sunset, long sunset. Sunset (ah, I remember) Sunset (yes, I remember) Sunset Spiders spinning ’neath streetlights. Sap like incense from the trees. I-Pod bubbles along the Peace Mile as Chinoy’s Pagoda shines! Suspended in the afterglow of days full of life. A waning moon surveys the scene. Head full of beautiful memories of my wife, our love, our home, our child! Sweet sunset – this darkness holds no fear. We may be miles apart my love, but tonight you feel so near. I pray you come to see just what you mean to me in this sweet sunset, sweet sunset. Sunset (what’s that voice I hear?) Sunset (now I’m drawing near) Sunset (who’s that face I see?) Sunset (someone’s calling me) Sunset (take me away) Sunset (take me away) Sunset May I breathe forth my soul in peace with you, Ah… men

about

When I was recording Dark light, I had the idea of ending the album with a trilogy of songs around the concept of commuting. However, once the length of the album started to become clear, the trilogy idea got left to one side and the two songs we'd finished were integrated into the album as a whole. Ever since, I've been keen to put the three songs back together again, so I extended the middle one (originally, it was a transition song with just one verse) and we re-recorded Get there from Journey Songs to make up a 4-track EP. Enjoy!

All songs written by Martin Poulsom.
